Shaded by the tree

Subject: Shaded by the tree Sun Jul 29, 2007 1:34 am

Hayley walked down to the lake her owl Fudge was perched on her shoulder waiting expectantly, it was still quite mild but she couldn't deny the fact that the temperature was dropping, she slumped down underneath the big oak tree next to the lake and took out her parchment and quill out of her bag.
She sighed silently to herself, everyone was bound to be having dinner right now, but she just never felt hungry.

After facing that boggart it had made her think so much of her family, she had only been her a couple of days and already she was feeling homesick.
Susan had told her not to worry about it and that she had felt the same way when she first came to Hogwarts. Still she found herself writing a letter to her father.
It read:

"Hi dad Schools been great so far, already been given a ton of homework, I finished my defense against the dark arts as soon as i got it!
Boggarts was out first lesson, I managed to defeat it on my second try!
Anyway missing you and evryone else lots!
Love Hayley xxx"

She wrapped it up into a scroll and tied it on to her owls waiting claw.
Her owl gave her an affectionate nibble and hooted as it flew off "remember to take as much time as you need to rest!" she called after it.
She sat staring at the lake, the usually still ater rippled slightly as the wind that was most likely to reach very high speeds that night skimmed over it.
It was some how calming just to stare out on to it.

Tina walked over beside Hayley. It really was calming.

Tina hated to break the silence but she thought it might be weird to just stand there. "Hello" she said eventually, very quietly.

Hayley jumped slightly, everything had been quiet, then silence had been broken.
Hayley looked up and smiled shyly, then she realized she must have looked stupid just staring at her smiling, "Hi, I'm Hayley" she spoke softly still with the same shy smile playing on her lips.

Tina looked embarrased "I did'nt mean to make you jump - sorry... I'm Tina!" she looked out across the lake and was quiet for a while. "It's lovely out here, isn't it?" she said dreamily.

Hayley smiled "don't worry about it, I always scare easily" she laughed slightly.
She nodded in agreement "Yeah, I love it out here" she spoke airly, "why aren't you at the feast?" she asked realization dawning on her as she put her parchment and quill back in to her bag

Tina shrugged. "Not really a fan of big crowds." She said airily. "I might go later when there's less people..." Tina looked at Hayley with a smile. There was something carefree, kind, about her. Something Tina liked.

"Same with me" she smiled, "I don't get it, I was never this shy back at home, just as soon as I got here.." she trailed off, she looked up and smiled at Tina, there was something about her that told her she knew exactly how she felt.
She turned her gaze back on to the lake , indeed it was very calming, but too much calm would set her off to sleep.
A particular cold gust of wind brought her back in to reality, "daydreaming" she laughed after flinching.

"Huh...? oh, me too!" Tina said, and for some reason she started to giggle, and couldn't stop.

Hayley smiled and tried not to laugh, she couldn't do it, and soon she too was laughing.
She could feel the giggles coming on and tried to resist from it but alas she couldn't. About five minutes later she stopped laughing.
"I've laughed so much it hurts" she joked while rubbing her side, then started laughing again.

Tina laughed so much she started to cough but still couldn't stop laughing. She tried to tell Hayley her side hurt but al she managed was "Yeah...H-hurt...too!"
When she finally stopped, she felt light headed and giddy. It was a great feeling. Tina felt like she hadn't laughed for so long. A lot had happened recently but now she managed to forget all of it.
The wind blew her jet black hair into her face, and she swept it back shakily, the odd giggle escaping from her.

Hayley giggled once more but it was cut short this time, she could feel a stitch on her left hand side aching so she took to rubbing it as if trying to ease the pain.
"What were we laughing about anyway?" she grinned as she pulled a stray lock of red hair behind her ear.

Tina sat down, thinking hard. "I...have no idea." it was hard not to laugh again, but Tina was sure she would faint if she did. Sitting helped ease the light-headedness. She grinned "But it was the funniest thing ever!"

Hayley grinned and nodded suppressing laughing again, she knew she couldn't handle laughing again.
"Yes, only we will laugh about something that we don't quite know what it is, and make it the funniest thing ever" she spoke brightly with a grin spreading on her face once more as she thought out loud "I never knew it could hurt to smile this much."

Tina smiled. Pure joy radiated from her. Feeling more giggles coming on, Tina squeezed her eves shut, closed her mouth, and held her nose. It probably looked really weird, but it really helped her to stop laughing. After a while she opened her eyes. She was still happy, but the desire to laugh untill she couldn't breath, was gone.

Hayley looked at her funny for a minute and then asked with a small smile "what are you doing?" then it dawned on her "ah your trying to stop laughing" she grinned "good strategy" she noted still grinning.

"Tkanks!" Tina said "Came up with it myself!" She said, with an attempt at mock-smugness. Tina sighed, then said "So, what's your story?", then quikly added "If you don't mind me asking!"

Hayley laughed once more then exclaimed "ouch" while smiling and rubbing her side.
"Well I come from just outside England, went to a muggle school until I was eight, then I was pulled out and home schooled, taught how to cook and work the farm with out magic and the most exciting thing thats happened to me is that I feel of a tree and broke my ankle" she shuddered at the memory.
"Now im outside because I'm to shy to sit in the great hall with the rest of my house" she sighed resigned.
Her sadness left as quick as it had came and her features brightened "what about you?"

Tina was silent as she thought about what she just heard. She had never broken any bones or evr been injured properly.
"My dad's a muggle, my Mum's 3/4 Muggle." She began. "I went to a primary school in Middlesex, London, untill I was six and weird stuff started happening around me. Stories spread about me and my friends deserted me - that's how I became a loner.
Then my family - My Mum, Dad, two brothers and various pets moved to Kerry, in Ireland. My Mum gave me lessons over the summer and I learned to control my self - but even in my new school I wasn't...well I wasn't the most popular girl!
Then when I turned 11 my mum explained everything about magic, then gave me the Hogwarts letter. I never really fitted in here either, but at least I'm with people like me! Then, this summer, My brother was killed 'by a car accident'" She leaned closer to Hayley - "But I reckon it was death eaters." she whispered.
Tina blinked back tears then smiled again. "Sorry - I went on a bit didn't I? But if you're gona tell the story, tell the whole thing, right?" She winked. Her Grandmother used to say that all the time. Her grandmother had been a great witch - an auror.

Hayley couldn't stop a tear falling when she heard what had happened to Tina's brother.
She sighed then started to talk again "Death Eaters killed my Uncle Edgar and my Auntie Amelia" she spoke her tones deep with sadness. She shook her head as if to get the thoughts out of her mind.
"Still out of sight out of mind" she sighed with a small smile"My father insisted on me learning the ways of muggles, which was why I was at school until I was eight and learnt to work the farm and cook with out magic. He wanted to make sure that I knew I did have muggle blood in me too. My Mum is pureblood and my father is a muggle so im a halfblood" she smiled "and proud to be." she laughed slightly still trying to get her aunt and uncle out of her mind.

"Yeah I've heard of your Aunt." Tina gave Hayley a sad smile, hoping this would be comforting. "I'm highly skilled in the ways of muggles, having practised them for fourteen years!" Tina smiled, shivering at another sudden cold gust, that was gone as quickly as it had come.

Hayley gave Tina a weak smile, many people had new before she had about her Aunt but not many people knew about her uncle.
Hayley smiled once more "well your more of n expert than me then."
Hayley flinched a little at the wind, as soon as the wind had gone rain drops were now spilling on to the lake.
She sighed slightly and rose up, they'd best get back up to the hall.
"Hall should be quiter know" she muttered as the rain began to get heavier, she was bound to be soaked through by the time she reached the hall.
"Are you coming up?" she asked hopefully.

Tina smiled "Okay!" she stretched happily. "I'm getting kind of hungry now." She stood up beside Hayley.

Hayley began to walk up the grounds and soon she was faced by the huge doors to the entrance hall.

It was midnight and the moon was out. Sick of wandering round the school, Tina had come outside for a change. She hadn't been able to sleep again. She was scared and worried. She sat beside the lake, watching the reflection of the moon shaking in the water. It was deathly quiet.
