Special Abilities: Tonks is a Metamorphmagus, a shape-shifter who can change her appearance at will. This ability, which is inborn and not acquired, greatly aids her in her role as an Auror. It does not, however, disguise her extreme clumsiness.
Distinguishing Characteristics: Tonks has a pale, heart-shaped face and dark, twinkling eyes. Her ability as a Metamorphmagus allows her to change her appearance at will, although for day-to-day use, she generally confines this to altering the color of her hair. She thought that violet made her look peaky, and so stuck with bright bubble-gum pink for the majority of 1995-1996.
Heritage: Half-blood. Her mother, Andromeda (Black) Tonks, is a pureblood and her father, Ted Tonks, is a Muggle-born.
Family: She is the daughter of Ted Tonks and Andromeda Black Tonks. Hence, she is the niece of Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy and the first cousin once removed of Sirius Black.

General: There is somewhat more to Nymphadora Tonks than meets the eye. At first she seems like any young and slightly rebellious witch - she wears Weird Sisters t-shirts, has patched jeans and brightly-colored hair, and she greets you with a carefree "Wotcher!" Beneath the cheery exterior, however, lies a dedicated and fiercely moral woman and a highly-talented young Auror
Nymphadora despises her first name and prefers to be called by her surname. Initial introductions aside, everyone refers to her simply as "Tonks." She even goes as far as to refer to her "fool of a mother" who gave her the name, although it seems unlikely that she has any other major issues with her immediate family. She has, after all, chosen a career as an Auror, which means devoting her life to fighting against Dark wizards. Her mother Andromeda was one of very the very few people strong enough to reject the Black family, their pureblood fanaticism and their Death Eater connections, and for that at least, Tonks must be very grateful.[/size]
[size=9]Tonks formed part of the Advance Guard that rescued Harry from the Dursleys' house in the summer of 1995. She immediately struck up a relaxed relationship with Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny, and she gives the strong impression that she can do this with virtually everybody. She was quite happy to discuss her time at Hogwarts (she left in the summer before Harry started) and the fact that she was never made a prefect due to an inability to behave. Despite her flippancy on the subject, however, it is clear that she was a very gifted student - even if she did mess around a lot.
Upon leaving Hogwarts, Tonks took Auror training (excelling in Concealment and Disguise and nearly failing Stealth and Tracking due to her natural clumsiness), qualifying in 1994. It is not known when she was recruited into the Order of the Phoenix, but it is clear that as a newly-qualified and inexperienced Auror, she is taking a number of risks. She was involved in the scheme to disguise the whereabouts of Sirius Black, and her Ministry bosses would not have been too pleased had they known what she was keeping from them.
Tonks fought at the battle in the Department of Mysteries, arriving with the other members of the Order. She lost her duel with Bellatrix Lestrange, however, and was badly injured. By the time Harry went home from Hogwarts in June 1996, she had recovered enough to greet him off the train at King's Cross station, and seemed restored to full health and spirits
This restoration was short lived. Harry was very surprised when he encountered Tonks at the Burrow just a few weeks later. She looked "drawn, even ill..." and had an air of sadness about her (HBP, p 82). Her hair had changed from its customary bubble-gum-pink to a dull, mousy brown and her face was pale. According to Hermione, Tonks blamed herself for Sirius's death, though this was not entirely accurate. Tonks did become so forlorn, however, that she temporarily lost her Metamorphosing abilities, thus explaining her dowdy appearance.Tonks was stationed in Hogsmeade before the start of the 1996-1997 school year to give the school extra protection. As the school year progressed, her depression remaining firmly in place. In addition to losing her shape-shifting abilities, Tonks's Patronus changed from its normal appearance, taking on the appearance of a big animal with four legs. Severus Snape was the first to point this change out to Tonks when she accompanied Harry to Hogwarts before the start of term feast, saying "I think you were better off with the old one - this new one looks weak" (HBP, p 160). Tonks was hurt and angered by his comments.
Over the Christmas holidays, Harry asked Remus Lupin about the significance of a Patronus changing shapes. Lupin took a long time answering the question; eventually telling Harry "sometimes a great shock, an emotional upheaval" can cause such an occurrence (HBP, p 340). As the school year wore on, Tonks made a few appearances at Hogwarts, looking increasingly agitated. One such visit occurred after news of a werewolf attack and left Tonks both emotional and eager to speak with Dumbledore.
Tonks was one of the Order members patrolling Hogwarts the night Draco Malfoy let the Death Eaters in. Though unhurt in the ensuing battle, she accompanied Lupin, Ron, Ginny, and Hermione to the hospital wing. The four of them stayed with Bill Weasley, who had been mauled by the untransformed werewolf Fenrir Greyback, until joined by Harry and Ginny, and later Mr. and Mrs. Weasley with Fleur. Tonks watched the emotional scene in which Fleur asserted she would marry Bill no matter what side effects he contracted as a result of the werewolf attack. Fleur's declaration prompted Tonks into action. She confronted Lupin about her feelings for him, seizing him by the front of the robes and shaking him. She insisted that like Fleur, she loved him in spite of his lycanthropy. Her admission, though surprising, explained her depression, erratic behavior, and changing Patronus - which had adopted the form of a werewolf. Lupin evaded her eyes, telling her his situation was different from Bill's and claiming he was "too old, too poor, too dangerous" for her (HBP, p 624). Mr. and Mrs. Weasley supported Tonks, encouraging Lupin not to let circumstance stand in the way of happiness.
