Cadmus was the middle of the three Peverell brothers. According to The Tales of Beedle the Bard, he received the Resurrection Stone from Death, although Dumbledore believes it more likely that he created the stone himself. He is an ancestor of the Gaunt family and therefore an ancestor of Lord Voldemort, which, ironically enough, makes him and Harry Potter, a descendant of Ignotus Peverell, distantly related. The Gaunt family is also descended from Salazar Slytherin, so it is possible, though far from certain, that the Peverells are related to Slytherin.
In Greek myth, Cadmus slew a monster that was guarding a spring. He took the monster's teeth and sowed them in the ground like corn. Immediately, an army of soldiers sprung up from the places where the teeth had fallen, and attacked Cadmus. It is from this story that the phrase "a Cadmean victory" comes; a victory that immediately puts the victor in a disadvantageous position. This is analogous to the story of Cadmus Peverell, who, thinking he had been victorious over Death in bringing his sweetheart back from the dead, then realised that he could not truly be with her, and so took his own life
